Using an import to update existing data
This is the best option to use if you want to add varying pieces of information to a group of People or Companies - for example, if you are adding several different tags to Companies and People, or adding email addresses to your People.
It is important to make sure that the Company name or People names that already exist in your Nutshell are an exact match to the names listed in your file. If you migrated to Nutshell from a system that used Legacy IDs, you can also use those to match your new data to existing data.
Using the basic import instructions, begin the import process with your new file. After selecting a file, you are taken to the Match page. Nutshell will detect existing data based on name or legacy ID - if you are updating People, be sure to map People > Name. If you are updating Company records, be sure to map Company > Name. If applicable, map the Person or Company Legacy ID.
It is only necessary to map the data that is being added or updated. Note that Nutshell will add to, but not overwrite, existing contact information. For all single choice, text custom fields, and Company or Person description fields, however, which only allows for one selection, all existing data will get replaced by the new data you map to that single selection field.
On the preview page, be sure to select "Update existing Companies/People", and select whether to merge duplicates based on name or email address.
Note that you cannot use an import to update Leads - imports can only create new Leads.
